Rent a car, or ride the buses?
The honest version: the car is not about comfort, it's about three specific beaches and one Saturday morning. Here's the weekend priced both ways.
No car
≈ €120–190 in fares, plus the Ushuaïa transfer
Airport: AERO4 both ways if the Friday timetable cooperates (€8–10 total for two), else one €50 taxi in and the bus out Monday.
Beaches: Cala Nova, Es Canar, Cala Pada on foot. Cala Llenya via U6 + A4. Cala Llonga via A12 or the ferry. That's a real beach weekend.
What you lose: Cala Mastella, Cala Boix and Pou des Lleó have no bus at all — Saturday's cove-hopping becomes one beach or a €25–30 taxi each way.
Dinners in town: U6 in (~15 min), €12–15 taxi back after the last bus.
Guetta Friday / Ushuaïa Sunday: taxi or transfer either way — the car doesn't help on club nights, you're drinking.
Car
≈ €180–260 for three days in peak August, + fuel ~€25
Saturday becomes the day it should be: Mastella at 09:45, Boix at 11:30, lunch at El Bigotes, back for the cinema. Impossible by bus, expensive by taxi.
Airport both ways on your own schedule — no timetable anxiety with a 19:00 landing or an 11:00 flight.
The catches: August parking at the small calas is a 9:30-or-nothing game; town parking on cinema night means the Sant Jaume car park; and the car sits idle Sunday, because you won't drive to Ushuaïa and drink.
Middle path: rent for Saturday only (~€60–90 + fuel). Pick up Saturday 09:00 in Santa Eulària or Es Canar, drop it Sunday morning. You keep the calas and skip two idle days.
The verdict, if you want one: if El Bigotes confirms your booking, rent — at minimum for Saturday. If it doesn't, a no-car weekend on the U6/ferry corridor plus one taxi splurge to Pou des Lleó loses surprisingly little.
Bus practicalities: pay cash to the driver (small notes), under €6 a leg. Live times on the Alsa Mobi4U app — the published PDFs are scanned images. Evening frequencies thin out; treat anything after ~22:00 as taxi territory. No swimwear-only boarding.
Beaches, by how far they are
The ruler is minutes of driving from the hotel door. Every card also says whether the bus is a real option — green means yes, red means car or taxi.
How the network works from your hotel. Beach lines radiate from Santa Eulària, not Es Canar — so most bus trips are U6 into town, then change. The exceptions on your doorstep: P10 (Cala Nova / Cala Martina) and the AERO4.
The three beaches with no bus are the three you most want on Saturday. Mastella, Boix and Pou des Lleó sit below Sant Carles at the end of unserved lanes. Two return taxis there cost more than a day's car hire — that's the whole rental argument in one sentence.
Parking is the whole game in August. The small northern calas hold a few dozen cars and fill by 10:30. Leave by 09:15 and you park at the top; arrive at noon and you reverse back up a one-lane road.
Where to eat
Santa Eulària's restaurant street is Carrer de Sant Vicent — the U6 bus corridor ends three blocks from it. Book everything: first weekend of August.
Getting home from dinner: the U6 back toward Es Canar thins out in the late evening — check the last departure on Mobi4U when you arrive, and treat €12–15 for the taxi home as the default after 22:30. The walk back along the coast road is 5.5 km and unlit in stretches; skip it.
The big nights
Two you've planned for, one wildcard. All three need tickets before you land — and none of them is a reason to rent a car, because every one ends in a taxi.
